The Schweizer Jahrbuch für Musikwissenschaft is published annually by the Schweizerische Musikforschende Gesellschaft. The current new series was launched in 1980 and follows up on a first series of seven volumes of yearbooks between 1924 and 1938 from the early days of the society, which at that time was called Neue Schweizerische Musikgesellschaft.

As in the past, the broad thematic orientation of the essays published in the yearbook is programmatic. Contributions by domestic and foreign authors in French, German, Italian or English offer a wide spectrum of scientific analysis of music. The yearbook thus serves as a tool for international exchange and as a platform for musicological research from Switzerland.

From 1934 to 1936, the Mitteilungen der Schweizerischen Musikforschenden Gesellschaft = Bulletin de la Société Suisse de Musicologie were published quarterly to supplement the Schweizer Jahrbuch für Musikwissenschaft. Information from local groups was published in the Mitteilungen in addition to general musicological contributions. From 1937 to 1980, the Mitteilungen were published under a new title Mitteilungsblatt / Schweizerische Musikforschende Gesellschaft.
