The Appenzellisches Monatsblatt was published from 1825 to 1847, first four years in St. Gallen then at Meyer and Zuberbühler in Trogen. Johannes Meyer (1799-1833) from Trogen was the founder of the Appenzellisches Monatsblatt and three years later, 1828, of the Appenzeller Zeitung. Under the protection of the very press friendly Landammann Mathias Oertly, Meyer was able to publish an extremely liberal periodical on regional studies and cantonal politics in times of large European press censorship, the Appenzeller Monatsblatt.
