The association Zürcher Unterländer Museumsverein was founded in 1936 and opened what was then the second local history museum in the canton of Zurich in the same year. The association was established during a period of political uncertainty, which in some respects brought society closer together. In its first year of existence, the association was supported by 131 individual members, several municipalities and charitable organisations.
The local history museum provides insights into rural life in the Zurich Unterland region in the 19th and 20th centuries. Its collection contains numerous exhibits such as traditional costumes and uniforms, agricultural equipment and archaeological finds from the area.
Since its foundation, the museum association has published the «Jahrheft» featuring articles on local history, often with reference to exhibits from the museum's collection.
