The magazine Penelope: magazine for the instruction and entertainment of the fairer sex was appeared between 1846 and 1847. Published by E. Looser, Langenthal, its goals were to "educate" and "entertain" housewives and mothers. It was divided into an "instructive" and an "entertaining" section which however were mixed together "insofar as the material allows". The instructive section was aimed at children on the one hand to support them in their development and education and also to the "wife, mother and homemaker" on the other. The entertaining section contained "short stories, poems, miscellanea, puzzles and so on". The final issue appeared in June 1847 with the announcement that it would continue to be published in the future.
