L'effort cinégraphique suisse was founded in 1930 by Jean Hennard as a bilingual magazine with national aspirations. It was initially still in competition with a similar, older Swiss publication Cinéma Suisse. In 1932, l'Association suisse des distributeurs de films (now l'Association cinématographique suisse) made the L'effort cinégraphique suisse into its official organ. From 1934, Hennard's magazine was published on a regular basis with a new look under the title Schweizer Film / Film Suisse. The ASDF acted as its publisher from 1937. This important professional journal existed for decades, under the title Film (1971-1979) and then as Kino-Film (1980-1989).

The film industry magazine defended the concerns and interests of cinema managers and film distributors. These publications presented information about the association, film news from Switzerland and around the world, film reviews, advertisements aimed at cinema managers, and provided an exchange of information within the film and entertainment industry. In addition, editorials and longer articles reflected the social debates of the time about cinema in general and certain films in particular. A variety of authors also commented on general issues related to film, as well as to the technical, legal or economic challenges of the industry.
