The journal Frauenbestrebungen was published as the official mouthpiece of the Union for women's aspirations. This association was the result of the merger in 1896 of the Association for the Reform of Women's Education and the Society for the Protection of Women and it continued until 1928. The two main reasons for the publication of the journal were indicated in the first issue: On the one hand it recognized the "manifold aspirations of individual women's clubs" and wanted to create a sense of togetherness. On the other hand, the union wanted to counteract the mockery that activists of the women's movement encountered. The journal therefore served to show the "work and creation" of the women's movement, to demonstrate its "social necessity" and show that it was "an inevitable stage in the development of human society". The motivation for ceasing its publication in 1921 was the publication of the Schweizer Frauenblatt which the editors considered to be the appropriate body to represent the concerns of the women's movement.
