The "Appenzell Yearbooks" are the annuals of the Charitable Society of Appenzell (Appenzellische Gemeinnützige Gesellschaft AGG). They have been appearing since 1854 and serve to provide "an all-encompassing archive for the local history and culture of Appenzell". Each volume is devoted to a particular topic of historical, cultural or social interest, and at the same time includes cantonal and community chronicles, obituaries of well-known inhabitants, Society records (annual report, accounts, membership list) as well as reviews of Appenzell literature.

The Appenzellische Gemeinnützige Gesellschaft is a non-profit association whose members have, since its foundation in 1832, committed themselves to involvement in the social and cultural concerns of the two cantons Appenzell Ausserrhoden and Appenzell Innerrhoden. To this end, the Society promotes social and cultural interests and supports people, projects and institutions. From its beginnings, and in cooperation with local archiving institutions, the Society has taken on the function of disseminating publications contributing to the cultural memory of the two cantons of Appenzell.
